What is Microsoft Azure and how can it help your business?

Microsoft’s definition:

“Microsoft Azure is a growing collection of integrated cloud services that developers and IT professionals use to build, deploy, and manage applications through our global network of datacenters. With Azure, you get the freedom to build and deploy wherever you want, using the tools, applications, and frameworks of your choice.”

But what does this mean for you as a business?

Windows Azure is software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS). It is an open source technology and supports both Microsoft-specific and third-party software systems, tools, frameworks AND different programming languages. Due to the fact that you need a lot more processing power to run applications for multiple users, Microsoft Azure allows you to host your software in the cloud and therefore grow and scale your business bit by bit without an initial large expenditure. This gives you the freedom to pay only for the resources that your application uses and then the opportunity to scale up when you need.

Here are a couple of short videos on Microsoft Azure, showing a brief overview and Microsoft's vision for Azure.

Microsoft Azure Overview:

The Azure Vision video with Mark Russinovich:

Mark Russinovich, Microsoft Azure CTO talks about truly embracing Open Source across the whole Microsoft stack using Azure.

“The fundamental disruption that the cloud is creating is based on instant access to compute an infinite storage….When you take a look at the cloud world so many architectures are just too slow and monolythic for the kind of rapid innovation and evolution of applications that necessary today.”

Microsoft Azure is global. It runs on a worldwide network of Microsoft-managed datacenters and along with its security centre it can help you “prevent, detect and respond to threats with increased visibility and control over the security of all your Azure resources.”

Microsoft have a whole host of ideas and things they are doing to show how innovative and flexible Azure is - things such as Machine Learning, Developing connected Apps using Azure and Xamarin, and across a whole host of industries including Manufacturing, Healthcare and Retail.
